This week in POSIEL, our mini assignment was to tell a story, with no text. Immediately, my mind went to making a “day-in-the-life” video. Personally, I love watching these sorts of simplistic videos that give a window into individuals’ lives, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to create my own.
Additionally, I thought such a video would help enhance that authenticity piece that I discussed in my previous process post. I want the contents of this page to be helpful and insightful for others, but also as true to me as possible. Moreover, adding such a video puts a face to my posts, which helps me foster a stronger “online self” on my site.
However, I will say that creating a video came at a greater challenge than I had anticipated. I ended up filming my clips on Snapchat, then editing and adding a voice over on TikTok, and then uploading to Youtube to manually type up closed captions and post on my site.
While I’m sure there was a much easier way that this could have been accomplished, this was unfortunately the route I chose to take. That being said, I am very happy with the final output of the video!
Additionally, I am glad that I had the opportunity to push myself to create content in a more creative way than I otherwise would’ve. Overall, I had a lot of fun making and editing the vlog, and it's definitely something I will consider doing more of on my site in the future.
As the weeks go on, this site is starting to feel more and more like my own “digital garden” (Basu, 2020), where over time I am empowered to create whatever I want (Basu, 2020). Moreover, every time I post I feel as though my site is changing, developing, and improving.
As mentioned in Basu’s article, my site also mimics a digital garden in the sense that my learning in web design and writing for an audience is public. That is, anyone that has been following along on my blog, has witnessed my ever changing theme, colour choices, various font options, category navigations, etc. etc. etc.
On a similar note, I am also always publicly learning in terms of my content. As a site that aims to promote healthy habits, much of my content is sharing my findings in this area. Therefore, as my knowledge grows and prospers, so will my site offerings!
On a more personal level, as someone who enjoys writing, but only ever for myself to read, I was initially a bit uncomfortable with the thought of writing for an audience. However, as we move on through the weeks in POSIEL, I am finding myself becoming more comfortable with creating for the eyes of more than just myself.
Beyond the purpose of this class and this blog, this is progress that I am happy to be making. For it’s exciting and empowering to recognize the potential to share works that I enjoy so much!
