This week in POSIEL, we discussed the idea of monetizing our websites through advertisements, and whether or not this is something we are interested in doing for our site.
For this, I played around with Google Analytics, and set up a Google Ad-sense account. However, I ultimately decided that I will not be monetizing my site and will not have ads presented on it.
It is not necessarily a bad idea, as there's definitely money that can be made. Moreover, I’m sure many of my classmates will choose to go this route. However, it is not something that I believe aligns with me nor my site identity
This is because the purpose of my blog is not to make money, nor sell anyone anything, and I do not want readers to feel as though that is the case.
Instead, I want my blog to be a space for authentic collaboration, through open learning and sharing.
Personally, anytime I am on a site that has pop-up ads everywhere, I find myself immediately wanting to leave the page. Moreover, the site automatically feels cheap and slimy to me, instead of real and personable.
Additionally, I do not adhere to the practice of turning everything one does into a side hustle. I believe people should do things they enjoy, because they enjoy them - not for monetary gains. An activity does not have to have monetary value attached to it for it to be worthwhile and meaningful.
I recognize this is a privileged opinion to have, but I felt compelled to include it in my post because it’s a major contributing factor to my decision to not monetize this blog.
That being said, as a business student I do find the topic and potential for business owners very fascinating. Moreover, it is amazing how much digital platforms have changed the marketing game in the past decade.
Therefore, I am excited to learn more about these possibilities in this course! I just won't be applying the concepts to this site.
